Faking It

Mobile Beauty With a Little Help from Our Friends

Ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Dear God! What happened?” Most of us have had those demoralizing moments, but we’re here to help. The world has known some fabulous fakes—impeccable art forgeries, dazzling faux jewelry, and even fake fruit that looks so mouthwatering you might be tempted to sink your dental work into it. So where’s the harm in temporarily augmenting your own personal reality? We’re not suggesting you go full-bore Kardashian—though if that’s your thing, knock yourself out. Rather, we want to share some of the unique mobile beauty resources we’ve discovered in Fairfield County for those special occasions  when you might need an emergency beauty boost.

Skin
Perhaps you’re going on vacation/attending your high-school reunion/headed to the beach with friends/asked to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Suddenly, you realize that you’re as pasty as a tub of cottage cheese, and you have a complete meltdown. Fear not! Just call Sun Kissed Mobile Glow and, like an angel from heaven, Nikki Medina will show up at your door with her portable tent shelter and trusty airbrush tan sprayer. All you have to do is stand there awkwardly in your bathing suit (or your birthday suit if you prefer; she’s seen it all and doesn’t judge) and within 15 minutes, you’ll look like you’ve been cavorting on a beach in St. Barts for weeks. You’ll have a smooth, even, sun-kissed glow; so get ready for the compliments.

Some of us (aka me) have been the victim of less effective spray tans, and have emerged from the experience looking like Tan Mom (my husband is still laughing). But this won’t happen with Nikki. She’s had years of experience and possesses a superior talent when it comes to the art of the airbrush tan. Need celebrity endorsement? Whenever Christina Aguilera visits the East Coast and is feeling pale, she calls Nikki. Other clients include the glitterati of Fairfield County as well as a gaggle of Miss America contestants. If women who appear in front of billions of TV viewers wearing nothing but a bikini and a fake smile can trust their fake tan to Nikki, you can, too.

Hair
You’ve seen them on TV and in the tabloids. Them. Those actresses, models, and reality stars with impossibly long, thick, shiny hair. You think to yourself, Those women are so lucky to have been born that way! But hold the mayo—were they? No, of course not. How do they do it? Extensions, ladies, extensions! They cheat, and so can you. Jared Riccardi of Riccardi Hair in Greenwich is one of the premiere stylists in Fairfield County who specializes in natural hair extensions.

His work has graced the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Allure, and many other style magazines. He has tressed the best for New York Fashion Week, (including supermodel Lydia Hearst, a former Wiltonite) and worked with a handful of the Housewives (shhh! we can’t say who). The results are stunningly natural and can give you a sexy, glamorous look. But if you want luscious locks you’ll have to dig deep, because they don’t come cheap, and need to be regularly maintained. Go to the salon, or, for the right price, Riccardi will come to you.

Lashes
If eyes are the windows to the soul, doesn’t it make sense to frame them with luxuriant dark lashes? That’s the rationalization I used when I splurged on a set of eyelash extensions before a trip to the Caribbean. Whether you’re going to be swimming, having a romantic dinner with your significant other, or just tucking your children into bed, I’m here to tell you that everything is better with beautiful lashes. Is this shallow? Yes. But who cares? Being liberated from the daily grind of applying and removing mascara is beyond fantastic, and you’ll be able to say buh-bye to the scourge of raccoon eyes. The process takes about two hours but once you have a “full set,” you can show up for maintenance every three to four weeks, depending on how your lashes are holding up.

The fake lashes are glued to your genuine lashes and not directly onto the skin. Local expert Sarah Giggar of Giggar Makeup Artistry says, “It’s a very relaxing service. Clients generally fall asleep and when they wake up they have a beautiful set of lashes.” Customizable from very natural to full-on Bambi, Sarah’s services are available in her studio or in the privacy of your own home.
