Pequot Founders: Building a Library and a Legacy

Feb 16, 2017 to May 7, 2017

This event occurs daily, every 1 day(s).

Explore the earliest history of Pequot Library, the opening of its doors in 1894 as a public library, "free as air to all," and the founding efforts of Virginia Marquand Monroe and Elbert B. Monroe.

- Discover letters from Pequot founders
- Explore 1894 acquisition ledgers and blueprints
- View vintage photographs
- Examine an 1855 passport
- See stereoscopic images from 1890s to the 1900s

Joining the Monroe’s in their efforts to fill the library with the best collections for the community were Mary Catherine Hull Wakeman and the Rev. William Holman. The exhibition will highlight activities, decisions, and purchases made by the Monroe-Wakeman-Holman team as they established the remarkable Special Collections held by Pequot Library today.

Using rare items from its Special Collections, the exhibition will trace the travels of Virginia Marquand Monroe and Elbert B. Monroe through Europe and the Middle East with photographs taken along the Nile, in Florence’s Duomo, and from the Vatican. Study maps and atlases of their time to trace the Monroe’s expedition. Step back into the 19th century Southport and peruse the archives tracing the early days of Pequot’s history.

Exhibition Dates: February 16 - May 7, 2017. This exhibit is free and open to the public during normal library hours.
