Little Free Library Fundraiser in the Litchfield Hills

Date/Time

Feb 18, 2017 to Feb 19, 2017
08:00 AM until 04:00 PM

Description

Little Free Library Stewards Rose Buckens and Jo Ann Jaacks will host a combined indoor tag sale fundraiser and informational gathering at St. Michael’s Community House, 23 South Street, just off the Litchfield green on Saturday, February 18 from 8am to 4pm and on Sunday, February 19 from 8am to 2pm.St. Michael’s is offering use of its community house in support of the event since there is a Little Free Library in front of the church.

The launch for the Litchfield Hills Little Free Library Grass Roots Project began as a great success with volunteers gathering at filmmaker Harvey Hubbell’s farm in Litchfield on July 2. Morris First Selectman Tom Weik came to encourage the Morris Boy Scouts, carpenters, roofers and painters who participated in the building workshop. The boxes have been painted by local artists, mounted on secure poles, and then distributed throughout Litchfield County. The mission is to build community, grow literacy and make new friends.

Members of the community are invited to come either day to learn more about the trending phenomenon of Little Free Libraries.  When the global nonprofit Little Free Library was honored by The Library of Congress for Creating Communities of Literacy, Founder Todd H. Bol of Wisconsin said, “For an organization that builds some of the smallest libraries around, it’s quite an honor to be recognized by the largest library in the world.”

Buckens and Jaacks have also “planted” a Little Free Legos Library at Morris Town Hall which was featured on thelittlefreelibrary.org website and were recently featured on news anchor Ann Nyberg’s show “Connecticut Newsmakers,” which resulted in an immediate request for a Little Free Library in Goshen by Elementary School Principal Tracy Keilty.  Pictured is Jo Ann Jaacks, Steward for the Little Free Library in front of St. Michael’s-Litchfield, and Morris First Selectman Tom Weik, who came to the Grand Opening.

Those wishing to donate recycled wood, cabinet doors, cabinet hinges or hardware, or books for adults and children are invited to contact Rose Buckens at 203-770-4156 or rosebuckensdesigns@yahoo.com or bring donations either day of the tag sale.
