Description

“Twenty Two North” Exhibit by Rick Schatzberg Opens April 15th at Gunn Memorial Stairwell Gallery

CONTACT: Sharon Morrissey/Gunn Memorial Library gunnstaff@biblio.org

From the Bronx to the Canadian border, photographer Rick Schatzberg spent more than two years photographing the human and physical landscape along Route 22 in New York State.  An exhibit of photographs documenting his journey will be on display at the Gunn Memorial Library Stairwell Gallery in Washington from April 15 through May 9.

“My work is informed by literary and photographic road trip genres, but it departs from the tradition of quickly moving through America,” explains Schatzberg. “Like improvisational music, I was trying to build and reinterpret a place through repeated sessions. Human subjectivity, color, light, chance, and movement are the elements that helped me describe an environment in flux, to understand a place as process rather than fact.”

Schatzberg has had a varied career. After spending thirty years as an executive and entrepreneur in the publishing and health care industries, he graduated from the International Center of Photography’s General Studies program and is currently in the University of Hartford’s Photo MFA program. He also holds a degree in anthropology from Columbia University and once played French horn with the Cecil Taylor’s Ensemble. He lives in Brooklyn, NY and Norfolk, CT.
