The Rising: Murder, Heartbreak, and the Power of Human Resilience
William Petit lived through a brutal beating in 2007—but his wife and daughters did not. This harrowing story resurrects itself in news reports about other home-invasion murders. Local writer Ryan D’Agostino has found a strong glimmer of hope in this story and tells it in The Rising: Murder, Heartbreak, and the Power of Human Resilience in an American Town.
“When a man loses everything, there is a danger of falling to a place where his heart will be rendered dark and useless,” D’Agostino writes. “But if he has the faith that people will listen to him and will go out and do one kind thing, maybe the hole will fill in.”
D’Agostino took on the story as an Esquire editor—earning unrivaled access to the surviving Petit. Now editor of Popular Mechanics, D’Agostino spoke at the Ridgefield Library on October 12, 2015.
