It's all about the dress
This summer the Little Black Dress takes on a new identity and reappears as the Little White Dress. A mandatory piece in most women’s wardrobe, this reliable staple looks particularly clean, fresh, and oh-so wearable at the moment. Proper, but not too prim. Here are some great white ways to lighten up your look.
1. White Nights
(Pictured right) This long, linen dress that’s beautifully lined with a graduated front hem will keep you cool while looking sexy and sophisticated on a summer evening. The strappy wedges and layered jewelry give it the added touch to transition from day to night. Shown, The Persephone Dress by Island Company, $255, at Olley Court.
2. City Whites
(Pictured left) Whether it’s for lunch and a matinee or taking in the latest exhibit at a popular museum, the art of mixology showsbeautifully in this Stella Carakasi dress of asymmetric lines and cut-up panel pieces. It is a look where the sense of European architecture meets casual elegance. Made from 100 percent hemp and linen, lined. Shown, The New Order Dress, $228, available at stellacarakasi.com and for additional pieces check out Stella Carakasi at SheShe on Main Street.
3. Work Whites
(Pictured right) Early morning is often the most challenging hour to find something to wear that’s easy to assemble, looks good, and stays crisp and fresh throughout the day. This classic A-line silhouette gets re-imagined in airy cotton lattice-inspired embroidery. With added hidden pockets and a pretty scalloped hem it looks great with flats or heels. Shown, The Samara Dress by J. McLaughlin; $275, in stores or at jmclaughlin.com.
4. Weekday Whites
(Pictured left) What could be more convenient during a busy weekday than peering into your closet and seeing this funtunic dress adorned with an embroidered neckline. When jeans seem too casual (especially when you don’t know where you might end up at 5 pm), this no-fuss solution gives you that put together kind of appeal without looking as though you’re trying too hard. Shown, The Embroidered Dress, from J.Crew; $128, at jcrew.com.
5. Weekend Whites (Pictured right) This light and roomy off-white smock dress slips easily over swimwear to take one from the beach to the boardwalk, especially when accompanied with the requisite straw hat. The three-quarter sleeve, gathered ruffled drop waist, lace applique hem, and key-hole tie neck are all details that make this dress a perfect purchase for one’s summer collection. Shown, Hartford American Classics 1979, 100 percent cotton woven dress, $325, through Ridgefielder Gretchen Hunt at email@example.com.
6. Anywhere Whites
(Pictured left) As the essential accessory this summer, we particularly like this LWD’s versatility. Wear with a pair of spike heels, bling, and a lady-like clutch, and it will carry you through an evening beautifully. Pair it with a nude pump, simple stud earring, and purse for your perfect workday dress. Or slip on slingback sandals, beaded braclets, and grab a canvas tote for a weekend away. Shown, Talbots Lace Fit-And-Flare dress. Misses and Petites, $199; Woman and Woman Petites $219, available in stores or talbots.com.
