The Litchfield County women hikers - The Intrepids.
The Litchfield County women hikers refer to themselves as The Intrepids. The group first laced up boots under the auspices of the Morris Parks & Rec Department in the late 1990s. Eventually, a core group took over the organizational duties. With a minimum of fuss and a healthy dose of friendliness, this constellation of teachers, gardeners, pilots, artists, and musicians has kept the hikes going for 15 years.
On a recent morning the destination was Laurel Ridge Narcissus Plantings in Litchfield, where thousands of daffodils and jonquils were at their peak. Meanwhile members caught up on their lives. Word had arrived of a member who had been stranded in Nepal following the recent earthquake.
“We all look out for each other,” Melissa Schipul says simply. “We’re not in this as a race—it’s the journey, not the destination.”
