Go Topless

a look at some pretty rad convertibles

Unlike L.A. or South Beach where convertibles are for being seen in, we buy convertibles to drive. Here are some of the best.

2013 Porsche Boxster

The 2012 Boxster seems nearly perfect. But Porsche has seriously upped the ante. The redesigned exterior is much more dramatic, taking cues from the new 911, Carrera GT and even the upcoming 918 supercar. With lower weight and more power, the Boxster remains one of the best driving cars on the planet.

2013 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

The top is an engineering marvel, featuring interlocking insulated magnesium panels covered in high quality canvas that perfectly mimic the lines of the hardtop. It’s as cozy and quiet as the coupe. And as fast, too.

BMW Z4

Available in 4 or 6 cylinder versions, the latest Z is a blast to drive and the best looking version yet. With up to 32 MPG.

BMW 1 Series

The smallest BMW is big on driving excitement. With room for the kids, too.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL

This is the car to impress the neighbors, and the valet. This sixth-generation SL’s exterior is more aggressive, yet still classy. The folding hardtop, 516 pounds of torque and long list of technology make this the ultimate roadster for driving and arriving.

Audi A5/S5 Cabriolet

If year-round practicality and room for four are on your checklist, look no further than this gorgeous pair from Audi. Both versions come with quattro AWD (optional on A5) and a long list of equipment.

Fiat 500C

The diminutive four-seat Fiat is not a true convertible in that only the center section of the roof opens up. Like most Italian cars, it’s fun to drive and gets more than its share of thumbs up from passersby. Coming next is the 160 horsepower Abarth version.

Ford Mustang

The Mustang keeps getting better with quality that now rivals many European cars. The convertible is available in a wide range of models from the 305 horsepower, 31 MPG V-6, to the pavement shredding 662-horsepower Shelby GT500. No matter which one you choose, there is no better antidote to the winter (or mid-life) blues.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

A perennial favorite, the Miata is now even better with an available folding hardtop.

2013 Corvette 427

The open-top Vette finally gets the big engine from the Z06 for its 60 anniversary.  Not for wallflowers.

There are ten good options for taking the top down and letting the wind blow through your hair.
