Retiring fire chief still serving others
After serving his country in the Marines, Dick Felner served Fairfield retiring as fire chief after 56½ years. Recently, Felner stood near SoundRunner, at 1596 Post Rd., where his dad operated Felner’s Shell gas station.
“We would get ham and eggs at Larry’s Diner,” now Magic Beans, “after an overnight fire shift,” remembers Felner.
“And buy groceries from Mercurio’s, owned by friends Jim and Sally Mercurio.”
As to his long-time civil-servant role, Felner says, “I miss the firefighters and working for the citizens of Fairfield.”
He says he’ll never retire. “I love helping people and am involved with the Ronald McDonald House at Yale Hospital.
