Best Picnic Spots In Litchfield
These are some of the best places in Litchfield County to have a scenic picnic! Take advantage of what nature has to offer this year and visit these lovely parks.
First right off of Buell Road
Left to the state of Connecticut in 1972 to be “kept in a state of natural beauty,” Edith Chase’s gorgeous estate is a lovely place to hike, picnic, bird-watch, and even cross-country ski. Free guided tours of the former summer-house are offered from June to October on the second and fourth weekends of each month, from 12-5 PM (12-4 on the final weekend in October). Although no open fires or grills are permitted, the grounds, numerous trails, unpaved lanes and residence lawns are open for exploring or relaxing on. There are no parking fees (gates are open from 8 AM to sunset year-round).

Designated as a state park in 1949, Burr Pond is a great place to picnic by the water, with picnic tables, a picnic shelter, food concessions, bathrooms, and a gorgeous veiw. You can fish and swim in the pond, which also has a boat launch, and canoe and kayak rentals are available for a low price. There is a small parking fee, which varies according to whether your vehicle is CT registered.
4.5 miles north of the village of Kent, along Route 7
Ideal for a scenic hike, Kent Falls features a 250 foot waterfall along its trail. There are also bathrooms, pedestal grills, and picnic tables, so you can enjoy a meal in nature. There is no charge for entry on weekdays, and only a small fee (depending on whether your vehicle is CT registered) on holidays.
Note: Do not to reach out and try to touch the waterfalls. The power of the waterfalls is often underestimated, and could be dangerous.
30 Lake Waramaug Road - Take a left onto North Shore Road and follow signs around the lake to park.
Lake Waramaug is gorgeous in any season, but absolutely stunning when the leaves start to change color. There are picnic tables, showers, food concession, and a campground that you are free to utilize on weekdays. It’s also ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, and camping! The price to camp is $17 a night for CT residents, and $27 for non-CT residents.
Take a left from Route 44 onto Route 272 south. The park will be on the left.
With a picnic shelter and a view described as “breathtaking”, along with free parking, hiking to the summit of this 240-acre park is a worthwhile adventure. Be sure to also make this trip at least once in the fall, as the view is only increased in its beauty by the changing colors of the leaves.
