Chocolate Expo at the Maritime Aquarium
Are you a chocolate connoisseur? If so, then you are in luck! This Sunday, January 26th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., you can sample some of the best the chocolate world has to offer at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. With Valentine’s Day only a few short weeks away, what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
The Chocolate World Expo is one of the largest “consumer-oriented” chocolate events in the U.S. There will be over 30 vendors offering samples of their chocolates and chocolate-related products.
The chocolate business accounts for over $80 billion per year. According to the World Cocoa Foundation, the U.S. consumes 1.4 billion pounds of cocoa and cocoa products with 47% of the cocoa products coming from Africa’s Ivory Coast. More to the point, the U.S. isn’t even the biggest chocolate consumer. The top spots go to European countries like Switzerland and Ireland for chocolate consumption. Clearly, we’ve got some catching up to do.
The Expo will be set up throughout the Aquarium galleries. You and your family can sample your way past all their other fun exhibits. Wave to the seals while you savor a few truffles!
“Think of the chocolate tastings in the way you might think of a wine tasting at a winery: you get a small sample to try and you often get to talk with the person who made the product," said Marvin Baum, the producer for the Chocolate World Expo. "If you like what you’ve tasted, you can purchase that product directly at the show for yourself or to give as gifts.”
But if you think truffles are the only goodies you’ll find, think again. They’ll have everything from chocolate-covered pretzels to a chocolate balsamic glaze to chocolate-scented bath soaps. Cooking demonstrations using chocolate will be led by celebrity Fox TV’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” Chef Barret Beyer at 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Executive Chef Lawrence Rosenberg, recipe-book author and owner of Bacon Bites, will demonstrate at 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Plus, in place of the Aquarium’s regular daily IMAX movies, Chocolate World Expo instead will present five free 40-minute shows Chocolate Mind Games by “mentalist” Marc Salem in the IMAX Theater. Think he can read your mind? Find out at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Seating is limited for all shows and offered on a first come, first served, basis. All of The Maritime Aquarium exhibits will be open this Sunday and will stay open two hours longer than normal past the usual 5:00 p.m. closing to 7:00 p.m. The special admission price on Jan. 26 is $15 for adults and $10 for kids 3-12.
