What’s Happening at FTC
Summer is waning and soon it will be back to school. But don’t despair! There’s still plenty of action happening at FTC this month:
If you weren’t able to score tickets to tonight’s B-52’s concert at The Klein, you can still get a seat to see Caribbean Reggae Dance-Pop sensation Collie Buddz on Stage One at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night. He has gained popularity on the Euro circuit just as much as he’s had radio play in Jamaica. The BBC touted him as a “talented vocalist” while Pier Magazine calls his sound “buzz-worthy.”
Reggae not your thing? Check out the jazzy funkiness of Umphrey’s McGee on Saturday, August 11th at The Klein. Known as one of the top-tier jam bands, they shift easily from song to song with a quick glance, a new tempo and a key change. Rolling Stone magazine said of their recent stint in Central Park, “Umphrey's McGee may be the most accomplished jam band in America — able to spin out at length between and inside their songs, but never at the expense of the invention and melodies in the songs themselves.
That same night on Stage One, you can see Fairfield University grads rocking it out with their band, Alternate Routes. Their bluesy folk “old-soul grace” has hit such noted stage scenes as Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Come celebrate our local talent!
On Thursday, August 16th, alternative rocker Kristin Hersh hits Stage One with her “stream-of-consciousness” lyrics and her “commanding” and “most beautifully damaged” voice. With heavy influences from R.E.M. as much as from Joni Mitchell, she takes her break as lead singer from Throwing Muses and puts her energy into her solo music.
Looking for that fat big brass trombone sound? Then hit Stage One on Thursday, August 23rd for a little action with Glen David Andrews Band. Best known in New Orleans circles, Nola.com sang his praises saying, “Approximating the power released by a six-pack of hydrogen bombs detonated at tent central, carrying his audience along on a wild ride from one detonation to the next, Andrews was searingly, exhaustingly astonishing.”
And if you’ve got some time on Friday, August 24th, head on over to The Klein to see Blues Traveler. Anyone with a yen for harmonica music and a throwback to their younger days in the 90s can hum along to such tunes as “But Anyway” and “Run Around.” After 25 years together, the band is still shaking it up.
