The local food movement has certainly taken hold in the Fairfield area. We have at least three thriving farmer’s markets, a Whole Foods Market, and several CSAs. We have quite a few restaurants in the area within a stone’s throw from the center of town that boast local and organic fare.

But there’s one tasty treat that many people forget has been and always will be a local food: honey. In fact, honey has made its debut on the food stage as the new “It Girl” in the culinary world. And Marina Marchese, owner of Red Bee Honey in Weston, knows it.

On June 23rd, Marchese will host The Ark of Taste—Honey Tasting, sponsored by Slow Food Metro North. It will take place at her apiary in Weston from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If you’re looking for that local gourmet experience, this is it! The Red Bee Honey tasting takes it to a new level. With formal linens and place settings in a natural surrounding, you can easily pretend that it’s an upscale backyard wedding.

But more than just nice tablecloths with a few pretty flowers, it will also be a lesson in bees—how they make honey and how we harvest it. Bees are vital to everything we grow and eat. Without them, we wouldn’t have the variety of foods we enjoy. Sometimes we forget that connection. This tasting will help us remember it by showcasing five of the honeys in the United States that are in danger of becoming extinct.

Marchese, known as the local honey "sommelier," is the president of the Back Yard Beekeepers Association in Connecticut. She studied the sensory analysis of honey tasting in Montalcino, Italy and has presented her signature Honey Tasting Laboratory Workshops at such top-notch venues like Murray’s Cheese Shop, Artisanal Premium Cheese Center and Eataly in New York City. Slow Food Metro North will be honoring Ms. Marchese with a Snail of Approval award at this event.

The rain date is June 30th at the same time. Tickets are $35 per person with a 25-guest limit. But no worries if you miss this one. Marchese has a listing on her site for more honey tastings in July and August.

About This Blog

Fairfield is a quaint little shore town tucked along the Gold Coast of the Long Island Sound. In 2006, Money Magazine rated the town as the ninth best place to live in the United States and the best place to live in the Northeast. We are a thriving community of active residents who walk, bike, hike, and run. And for our canine friends, it's a dog's life at the beaches and the hiking trails at Lake Mohegan. It is a great place for families and, with two major universities, it is a great place for students both young and old. With two epicenters of commerce on Post Road and Black Rock Turnpike, there is a range of shopping opportunities from major chains to Mom and Pop shops. Looking for a fun night out? Park your car in the center of town and the world is your oyster! See a concert at the Fairfield Theatre Company. Catch a movie at the Community Theater. Grab a bite to eat or a quick drink at any of the amazing restaurants peppered along the main drag. This blog celebrates all the things that are happening around town. Stop by and come see what all the fuss is about.
