Happy Memorial Day!
There’s nothing like being in Fairfield for Memorial Day weekend. The unofficial start of the summer kicks off this Monday, May 28th with the annual Pancake Breakfast at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Old Post Road. It’s right next to the parade stand and runs from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. So if you get a little hungry while you’re watching the parade, stop on by.
Across the street at First Church Congregational, they will be holding hot air balloon rides for $10 each from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The kids can hop around in the bouncy castle while they’re at it. And if the pancake breakfast at St. Paul’s didn’t quench their need for sugar, First Church will have ice cream, cotton candy, and fresh baked goods.
A Fairfield tradition, consider the parade the best form of tailgating. The crowd parks their cars along Post Road for the kick off at 10:00 a.m. Or, if you’re lucky enough to have a generous friend along the route, many people prefer to park their lawn chairs along side the parade route.
It starts at 10:00 a.m. sharp, rain or shine. It runs from South Pine Creek Road along Post Road to the Fairfield Public Library, turning south along Old Post Road. The route then makes a quick left heading east and continuing along Old Post Road. It passes the Town Green and ends just beyond the intersection with South Benson Road.
This year’s parade boasts the usual suspects like the Ancient Mariners Fife & Drum portraying the common sailor of 1812 all in their bare feet. Or how about the Pyramid Shriners? Who can resist their teeny-tiny cars racing around each other in circles? But this year, the parade adds one more addition: vintage cars from the Connecticut Seaport Car Club. So if you have an auto enthusiast in your house, come on down!
And if you haven’t had enough fun yet, the Fairfield Museum and History Center has an annual picnic on their front lawn. Come see this year's photo exhibit, Images 2012. Always a crowd pleaser! The Kiwanis Club will have hot dogs and hamburgers while there will be plenty of activities for the kiddies.
Admission is free and the event runs from the parade’s end until 4:00 p.m. The museum is located at 370 Beach Road. But from the parade route, just head past the Town Hall and you’ll hit the back side of the museum lawn by the historic Sun Tavern.
If you can’t make it to Fairfield, the following towns in the surrounding area also have their town parades that day: Darien, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Southbury, Wilton, Roxbury, Oxford, Weston, Trumbull, Westport, Norwalk, Derby, Shelton, and Stratford.
Got other plans that Monday? No worries. Redding will host their town parade on Saturday, May 26th. On Sunday, May 27th, there will be parades in Sherman, Milford, Monroe, Stamford, Rowayton, Greenwich, Brookfield, and Ansonia.
