Happy New Year
Another year has come and gone. And if you’re like the rest of the planet, you’ve had more pies, cakes, cookies, and cheese platters make their way to your waistline than you’d care to count.
Now it begins: Eater’s remorse. Gotta get healthy. Need to lose weight. Those thoughts are usually preceded by not being able to zip your pants.
In a December 31st article in The New York Times, this is nothing new for the fitness and weight-loss industry. Their businesses thrive on our lack of self-control and it usually begins right after the new year. Memberships are cheap and easy. Just sign up and get the body you deserve!
(For those looking for weight loss programs, see our previous article on this site about Annette Alfieri’s 6-week diet plan at Lighten Up!)
This isn’t New York City or L.A. And, most of us don’t have a personal trainer who helps us keep fit in our in-home gym. So, what’s a Fairfield resident to do? No worries. There are a number of places in town that can help you on your way to a healthier, fitter you in 2012.
85 Mill Plain Road
If you’re really serious about getting trim, this group will get you toned in a matter of weeks. They have one-on-one, small and large fitness groups. They teach basic to advanced level classes in functional exercise, athletic conditioning, plyometrics, kettlebell training, Olympic weightlifting, medicine ball and dumbbell training, power-lifting, gymnastics, rowing, running and jumping rope.
Edge Fitness Club
500 Kings Highway Cutoff
Having not to long ago moved into their 400,000 square-foot location in the former Linens N Things building, this gym club offers all kinds of machines, free weights, group classes, Pilates, Zumba, kick-boxing, and spinning. Their membership starts at about $20 per month. They also have a child care room for moms on the go. They have other locations in Greenwich, Norwalk, Stratford, Shelton, Milford, and Derby.
111 Black Rock Turnpike
A national chain, this fitness club has brand-name cardio and strength equipment. With a membership, you can use their other locations as well. They have no day care, but they do have pizza nights on the first Monday of every month. Not sure if that is counter-intuitive to weight-loss, but let’s take the perks where we can get them.
The Fitness Center at the Eunice Postol Recreation Center
75 Mill Plain Road
Strength and training as well as aerobic equipment fill the space. While small, it serves it’s purpose and is centrally located in town just off the Post Road and near the train station. Open seven days a week, there are yearly memberships for $130 (less for seniors) and three-month memberships for $65 if you’re looking for something more short-term.
Yoga for Everybody
27 Unquowa Road
Find your inner “Om.” Yoga is a healthy lifestyle choice for your mind and your body. For some, yoga is a way to keep strong without feeling like you’re working out. Fairfield Hot Yoga

They concentrate a number of different poses of yoga in a room heated to as much as 105 degrees. Hot yoga has gained popularity in recent years because it is considered to detoxify and cleanse the system. Fairfield Hot Yoga has unlimited classes for one month for $99. Their schedule varies a little, but generally they have one morning class and two evening classes during the week that usually last about an hour and a half.
