77th Annual Dogwood Festival
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13th this year. If you’re looking for something special to do with Mom, stop by the Dogwood Festival at the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church. This event has been a spring highlight for over three quarters of a century.
What’s in store this year? Try this on for size: arts and crafts, a plant and garden boutique, a Friday luncheon, a Saturday night fundraising barbecue, a two-mile fun run and a “mini dash” for the little ones, a concert in the sanctuary, antiques, an art show, and food, food, food! SPF Grill and Blossom Café will be on hand again to provide the goodies.
But what about the dogwoods? The weather pattern in the last year has been more than a little bizarre. Last winter’s massive snow led to a heat wave in July, a September hurricane, an October snowfall with barely a flake this winter, and an early spring with record high temperatures. That’s bound to adversely affect the pretty posies.
With the warmest March on record, fruit trees and flowers alike sprouted blooms. That’s about a month too soon. So this year’s Dogwood Festival might be a whole lot greener than it has been in past years.
But not to worry! There will still be plenty of activities for all to enjoy, dogwood blooms or not. What originally started out with a few little old church ladies selling fudge and handmade crafts on a card table has become a widely-known festival celebrating the rite of spring by welcoming thousands of people from near and far. Some of the proceeds from the festival will go to the church’s outreach programs, which includes Operation Hope, The Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport, the Appalachia Service Project, and Friends of Christ in India.
The festival runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th. On Sunday, May 13th, the festival runs from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission and parking are free and open to the public.
