04/18/12B-52’s at The Klein This SummerWho doesn’t have fond memories of “Rock Lobster” and “Love Shack?” Get your groove on with the B-52s on August 7th. Call them New Wave, punk rock, or dance pop, they rock the house and FTC’s got ‘em. Rolling Stone magazine covered part of their new tour in February. Even after 35 years in the industry, they’ve still got it going on. “Schneider's speaksinging delivery, one of the most recognizable in all of pop music, still sounds great. Kate Pierson's pipes are stunning despite three-and-a-half decades of wear, and Wilson and Strickland strut like it's the Seventies.” The group started out in 1976. After a few too many drinks at a Chinese restaurant and an impromptu jam session, a band was born.... |

02/13/12Say No to Bullying at Roger Ludlowe Middle SchoolWhat would you do if your child was so severely ridiculed and humiliated at school and online that he chose to take his own life? That’s what happened to John Halligan’s son, Ryan, in 2003. Ryan was only 13 years old. Since then, Halligan, a Vermont resident, has taken on the media circuit to warn all parents about signs of bullying, cyber bullying, and teen depression. He doesn’t want his tragedy to be yours. On Thursday, February 16th, Halligan will speak at Roger Ludlowe Middle School about the dangers of bullying and what can be done to prevent it. Parents and kids alike will be given strategies that can empower them to avoid bullying, whether face-to-face or online. (Middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will be viewing Halligan’s... 01/02/12Happy New YearAnother year has come and gone. And if you’re like the rest of the planet, you’ve had more pies, cakes, cookies, and cheese platters make their way to your waistline than you’d care to count. Now it begins: Eater’s remorse. Gotta get healthy. Need to lose weight. Those thoughts are usually preceded by not being able to zip your pants. In a December 31st article in The New York Times, this is nothing new for the fitness and weight-loss industry. Their businesses thrive on our lack of self-control and it usually begins right after the new year. Memberships are cheap and easy. Just sign up and get the body you deserve! (For those looking for weight loss programs, see our previous article on this site about Annette Alfieri’s 6-week diet plan... |

12/28/11Festival of LighthousesEvery year, my three girls and I make the trek to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk for what has become a holiday tradition for us: to see the lighthouses. Shortly before Thanksgiving until around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the lighted structures made from all sorts of different materials stand tall and sparkly. The girls get to vote on which one they like the best (and usually bicker over who’s right and who’s wrong). But the best part of this event now in its 10th year is how many people who are relatively local to the area participate. The majority of the 24 contestants come from in and around the Fairfield County area with a few scattered in New York state and the Eastern portions of Connecticut. The submissions have been everything from comical to... |

12/22/11Borders may be gone, but book store stays in the communityThe Fairfield University Bookstore opened to the public the first weekend in November. Since then, they have maintained a steady flow of community members popping in and out of their storefront. Borders was the go-to spot for many shoppers in town. It was an anchor for that section of Post Road with regular book signings, lectures, and events. Add the adjoining café and it was a nice, leisurely place to peruse new titles. But while Borders’ exodus may have left a hole in town, Fairfield University wanted to capitalize on that vibe. One thing they are keen on, however, is making the community aware that this is not a place just for students. “We’re not just a university book store,” Craig Kennedy, the trade books and community relations... |

12/15/11Teaching Those Who Find It Hard to LearnAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Dyslexia. Autism. We’ve all heard of these learning disabilities. We’ve even seen kids who have them. But what if it’s your kid? For many parents, it can be frustrating to watch their children struggle with their school work. They know their kids are intelligent, but too often it isn’t reflected in their grades. For other parents, it may not be a learning disability that affects their children at all, but poor study habits that get in the way of a better report card. If any of those scenarios sound familiar, there is hope here in Fairfield County. With report cards coming out before the holiday break, parents often look at the new year as a chance to get back on track. A Way to Learn on Post Road in... |

12/09/11Make A ‘Splash’ This Holiday SeasonWhen was the last time you could get your car cleaned and donate to a charitable cause all at the same time? Since early last month, Splash Car Wash at 1400 Kings Highway has been donating a percentage of every gift certificate or gift card purchased to Operation Hope. It’s a simple equation: the better the holiday sale, the better their donations will be. A small percentage may not sound like much, but it adds up quickly. And, Splash knows that very well. The company is not unfamiliar with charity. Each branch chooses a local organization to donate proceeds to every year. Last year, thousands of dollars were donated to organizations in and around their 17 locations. The Fairfield Splash has been donating to Operation Hope for the last four or five years. “We... |

12/05/11Elf on the Shelf: Cute Holiday Tradition or Not So Much?Have you heard about the Elf on the Shelf? If you have children and they still believe in the big man in the red suit, you probably have. And he may already be the bane of your existence. For those who may not be familiar with this new holiday tradition, it was generated in 2005 by a mother-daughter team in Georgia. The duo self-published a book about a “pixie scout” elf that tells Santa who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. The book is accompanied by a toy elf decked out in a red leotard and felt Santa hat. He flies to the North Pole to report every night—by sheer elfin magic, of course—and then returns to your house before the children awake. A few ground rules: You must give him a name. You must not touch him or he loses his magic.... |

12/01/11A Little Bubbly Goes A Long Way“I only drink champagne when I’m happy, and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.” ~Lily Bollinger, head of Champagne Bollinger from 1941-1971 If you managed to escape Black Friday and Cyber Monday unscathed, pop a cork on a bottle of bubbly to celebrate. Consider it in the spirit of Madame Bollinger. And if you’re Ruth Frantz, founder of Henri’s Reserve, that’s exactly what she’d like you to do, too: drink champagne always and for every occasion. While you’re at it, pop open two! “Champagne goes with everything!” she... |

11/23/11Sudan Canvas Project on November 27thThe economy is shaky. The stock market is erratic. The unemployment rate still hovers around 9%. Sometimes we’re so mired in our own bad news that we don’t see the big picture. What if your entire village was massacred because of political strife? What if you were orphaned at the age of 10 and had nowhere to go? What if you watched the raping of your sisters and your mother? Civil war. Genocide. Slavery. Homelessness. Starvation. That’s the grim reality for many people in Sudan. And, it is those atrocities that make people like Cynthia Davis outraged. “Innocent people shouldn’t be bombed out of their homes,” she said. Davis, founder of the Sudan Canvas Project, has spearheaded a traveling exhibition of about 50 paintings from... |

11/18/11“Diet” is a Four-Letter WordWith the holiday season upon us, dieting is probably the last thing you want to think about. Or, maybe it isn’t if you want to fit into that little black dress by New Year’s. But if you’re Annette Alfieri, “diet” doesn’t have to be a dirty word. As a clinical nutritionist and wellness coach and owner of Lighten Up on Sherman Street, she sees a number of people in her practice that want to lose weight. Her first lesson is to teach her clients that a diet is a lifestyle change, not a temporary deprivation of the foods that are bad for you. Most people think of a diet at starving themselves. “Forget all the weight loss rules you’ve learned. Everyone has that ‘pre-made’ diet in their heads,” she said,... Posted at 08:00 AM | Permalink |

11/01/11I Am MaryannWe all have those eureka moments when a good idea comes our way, like a light switch going on. For Fairfield resident Maryann Dolzani, that light switch went on while listening to an unreleased song composed by her husband, Brian Dolzani, a local musician. In a melody entitled “Broken,” she found the words “I am broken, I am healing…” She realized that we all have those “I am…” statements. Maryann has worked for a number of years in media sales and consulting. But while her career has been successful, there was something missing. She felt that her creative side was dormant and needed a little waking up. That’s what led to launching her own jewelry business, I Am Maryann. Her line features sterling silver and gold-filled... |

08/28/11Hurricane Irene Leaves Battle ScarsTake a look around the beach area. Flooding, downed trees, and power outages met most residents this morning. Some even chose to kayak down the street rather than slog through the high waters. But by the end of the day, a brief but beautiful chunk of blue sky peeked through. 08/23/11Earthquake in Connecticut?Did the Earth move for you, too? Just before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, shock waves from a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Virginia rocked the East Coast region as far north as Toronto and as far south as Atlanta. Buildings were evacuated in New York City. They evacuated government buildings in Washington, D.C. as well. (And as a friend of mine said on his Facebook page, the Republicans are blaming Obama for this, too.)Even Newark Airport closed briefly. Planes are now boarding again, however. The New Haven Open stopped game play and evacuated the stadium. No injuries or damage has been reported so far, just massive confusion. So when was the last time an earthquake shook anything in Connecticut?According to the U.S. Geological Survey, this area of the country has very little seismic... |

08/15/11Designs by KellyFor Kelly Sohigian, what started out in fashion ended up in interior design. And, that may be good news for your living room—or your kitchen, den, or master bedroom suite. Her company, Kelly Designs LLC, is based in Fairfield. She works throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties and her projects run the gamut from window treatments to full floor plans. But her flair for interior design grew organically. Sohigian spent a long time in the fashion industry. Then as it often happens, motherhood changed her priorities. Still wanting to keep her finger in the professional pie, she helped friends and family decorate and style their homes. At that point, it became obvious that she was on to something when more and more people asked her to help them revamp their homes. In the last six... |
