Venus Transit Tonight!
Beginning at 5:09 PM CDT on today, June 5th, the brightest planet in our solar system will pass in front of the sun and create a rare sight that you won’t want to miss. In this extraordinary event, the Venus Transit, Venus will be visible as a silhouette; a tiny, shadowy dot in front of the sun. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun, but there are many safe ways to witness the experience: the transit is being broadcast on slooh.com and Astronomers Without Borders. If you’re feeling crafty, you could create a pinhole camera. There are also many astronomy clubs in the area where you can view the transit through a special telescope. The Venus transit won’t happen again until December 11, 2117, so unless you’re planning to stick around another hundred and five years, be sure to catch it tonight! The optimal time will be around 9:29 CDT, or 5:29 PM EDT.
