Take up Beekeeping to Maintain a Local and Organic Lifestyle

The Bedford Bee is a local company that is dedicated to providing bees, bee hives, and bee-related products (i.e. honey, wax, and pollen) to local Bedford residents who wish to live a more local and organic lifestyle (not to mention eco-friendly!).

Now you can host your very own bee hive! The Bedford Bee comes to your house to do an initial site assessment and introductory visit to see if your land will support a healthy bee colony.

Installation of the hive occurs in the first weeks of May. After that, the Bedford Bee comes every two weeks to make sure your colony is healthy, functioning well, and to collect honey. In the first week of August, the Bedford Bee harvests any excess honey the bees have cultivated and prep the bees for the winter season. Around Halloween time, the bees are picked up and brought to the "bee yard" for the winter for proper maintenance and care.

At the end of the season the Bedford Bee gives you ten pounds of honey in 12 oz. jars. No matter what (even if your bee colony fails) you are guaranteed your ten pounds of honey. Think of all the great recipes you can use the honey for! Think of how good your freshly brewed cup of tea will taste with your very own organic honey. Now that's a sweet thought!

Many locals in the area have claimed how much local honey and personal beekeeping has enriched their lives. It gives you an opportunity to learn about a very complex living creature (honey bees) and you get something sweet in return. Many in the area are claiming that they almost create a bond with their own honeybees! They become like part of the family and you care about the health of the bee colony.

It's becoming very quickly la mode to be local, produce home-grown food, and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Harvesting your own bees is a great way to put your good foot forward, do something good for the planet, and support local businesses like the Bedford Bee.

As of now, the Bedford Bee services Bedford, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, Mount Kisco, North Greenwich, North Stamford, New Canaan, Ridgefield, New Castle, North Castle, Somers, and Yorktown.

There is a fee for beekeeping services and instructional lessons on beekeeping, but funds that are earned go towards queen rearing, research, and educational programs that the Bedford Bee provides.

So if this is a new hobby and lifestyle you are thinking about picking up, contact the Bedford Bee and see if your home provides suitable conditions for a bee hive.  Check out www.bedfordbee.com.
