“The Voice” Chooses Collin McLoughlin, and Collin Chooses Adam Levine

As a son or daughter, if you want to see your parents break out in cold sweats, tell them you want to drop out of school to pursue your dreams of conquering the world with your mellifluous voice. Local Bedford-native Collin McLoughlin did just that, as he left his studies at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Music to pursue his dreams. While most parents think their child is a gifted prodigy in everything and anything, 24-year-old Collin, got the validation he needed from celebrity judges on the reality singing competition, “The Voice.” Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Christina Aguilera swiveled their chairs so only their backs were facing Collin at the start of his audition, which is routine in the blind audition phase. Once Collin...

Venus Transit Tonight!

Venus Transit Tonight!

Beginning at 5:09 PM CDT on today, June 5th, the brightest planet in our solar system will pass in front of the sun and create a rare sight that you won’t want to miss. In this extraordinary event, the Venus Transit, Venus will be visible as a silhouette; a tiny, shadowy dot in front of the sun. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun, but there are many safe ways to witness the experience: the transit is being broadcast on slooh.com and Astronomers Without Borders. If you’re feeling crafty, you could create a pinhole camera. There are also many astronomy clubs in the area where you can view the transit through a special telescope. The Venus transit won’t happen again until December 11, 2117, so unless you’re planning to stick...

Bedford Oak Turns 500 Years Old

Bedford Oak Turns 500 Years Old

The Bedford Oak is considered one of Bedford’s landmarks due to its long existence and natural beauty.  This white oak tree, or quercus alba, symbolizes the establishment of Bedford over 400 plus years ago.  On a hot summer day a few years ago, I drove through town taking pictures of landmarks.  I continued my journey on Route 22 and came across this beautiful tree that stood so sturdy.  Standing on Hook Road, I pulled my car over and walked over to the tree.  Growing up in Bedford, I always knew that the white oak tree existed, but I never took the time to learn about it.  The white oak tree is approximately over 500 years old, with a width of more than 30 feet.  Furthermore, the width of its branches from side to side is 120 feet. ...
