Words to Book
Bestselling author Simon Winchester's book is coming to life on the big screen with Mel Gibson
Bestselling book author and Sandisfield resident Simon Winchester’s The Professor and the Madman is going to be made into a movie starring Mel Gibson, with Sean Penn also in talks to come aboard. Gibson bought the movie rights to the book nearly two decades ago. “This much-delayed movie is actually being fast-tracked and may actually be made—in which case I’ll be as happy as a dog with two tails,” says Winchester.
The production of the unique tale of madness, genius, and making of the Oxford English Dictionary is projected to begin in September in Ireland. Winchester is hoping to be invited on the set and return to the country where he spent his early journalistic days as a reporter in Belfast.
“I am holding out the hope that I may get a walk-on part, perhaps as one of the doctors in the asylum—though not being a member of Actors’ Equity, it wouldn’t be, couldn’t be, a speaking part. I might be able to cough, though I suppose doctors aren’t supposed to cough.”
