Honestly Restoring Abe
The Lincoln Memorial (and the artist) gets some TLC
The National Park Service is embarking on a $24-million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial that includes roof repairs, restoration of the 19-foot-high monument, and an expansion for visitor services.
Donna Hassler, executive director of Chesterwood, former estate of Lincoln sculptor Daniel Chester French, has been invited to join the restoration committee that will help inform the new space, slated for completion in 2022.
Hassler says that in her eight-year tenure as director she has yearned for this kind of connection with the NPS so that the artist would be recognized as clearly as the monument itself.
