Art of It: Autumn Alchemy
Susan Himmel’s art work inspired Gerald Tuckman to pen prose.

a bit like passing through reeds
kissed as you brush by.
Gerald Tuckman walked into Susan Himmel’s open studio at NUarts during one of Pittsfield’s First Fridays Artswalk and was drawn to her work. They began to talk, and he asked if he could name some of her paintings that had yet to be titled. A poet with a second home in Otis who hadn’t written in a long while, Tuckman was inspired not only to name each of Himmel’s 15 pieces that make up her current series, Autumn Alchemy, but also to pen prose for every one of them. “I found it inspiring and exciting,” says Himmel of the artwork and poetry pairing. “Jerry had a way of seeing into my paintings.” The exhibit, including Himmel’s Sky Through Birches and companion art-inspired haiku, is on view by appointment.
