Reading With Therapy Dogs
Want to snuggle up and read with a furry friend? Children from ages five to eight are welcome to come to the Bedford Hills Free Library for Reading With Therapy Dogs.
Participants eagerly read a few pages or share their favorite illustrations with Ozzy or one of his canine peers. All dogs are well-trained and accompanied by their owners. For upcoming dates, please check bedfordhillsfreelibrary.org.
The objective of the program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows children to practice the skill of reading. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to him, a save non-judgemental environment is created. A child's reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.
The program builds excitement about reading. Many children talk about going home and reading to their own dog, or other pet. What better way to improve a skill than to do it.
