Bedford: Do I really need to license my dog?
Yes, by law dog owners in Westchester County are required to license their dogs with their town, and negligent dog owners can be assessed a fine. Licensing a dog in both Bedford and Pound Ridge is a simple procedure that requires submitting a completed form to the Town House along with evidence that each dog has been vaccinated for Rabies. In Bedford, the annual fee is $20 for neutered and $25 for non-neutered dogs. In Pound Ridge, the fees are slightly lower.
“The goal of licensing dogs is to control Rabies,” explains Joanne Pace, Town Clerk in Pound Ridge. “Another advantage of licensing is safety,” adds Boo Fumagalli, Town Clerk in Bedford. “Licensing ensures that we can return a lost dog to its owners,” she continues. “A few years ago, a Katonah family was vacationing in New Jersey, and we got a call that their dog had been found with a Bedford license on the collar. We were able to reunite them.“
