North Salem’s Hayfields Market is a hybrid of sorts—a seamless blend of garden center, gift shop, and café. In a little over a year the spot has become a community favorite. “The residents have really embraced us,” says owner Renea Dayton.
Dayton had a vision of a place that “fulfilled a need in town and reached a wide audience.” The café does a brisk breakfast and lunch. The food runs the gamut with health-conscious choices such as a wrap with egg whites and avocado to the popular (and less health-conscious) Fricken Chicken with a breaded chicken cutlet, bacon, and mozzarella cheese. The coffee and house-made baked goods are divine, as well.
Summertime is when Hayfields really blooms. The garage doors of the former gas station are open, fresh produce is constantly being replenished, and the garden center is a hub of activity. The first Sunday of every month brings the popular Cars & Coffee event, and on some Friday evenings there are BYOB BBQ dinners with live music. “There’s a great atmosphere up here in the summer, we get a good number of weekenders, and we thought everyone would love a low-key and fun dinner option in the area,” Dayton says. Indoor and outdoor seating available.
