May I make a holiday gift to the children of incarcerated women in Bedford Hills?
Yes! There are two ways to donate gifts for incarcerated women at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility (BHCF) to give to their children for the holidays. But don’t think you can just drive up to the prison and drop off a gift. “There are two protocols,” says a staffer in the office of Public Information in Albany for the New York State Department of Corrections.
You may contact Lewis Goidel, onsite director of volunteer services at BHCF, directly at email@example.com about to how to appropriately drop off a gift. Or you may donate via Hour Children, which, in addition to its many other services, runs a Holiday Program in which the incarcerated women may “shop” for donated toys to present to their children during the holiday season.
Hour Children advises that donations are to be dropped off at the storehouse at BHCF during its hours of operation (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The storehouse is located at 247 Harris Rd. in Bedford Hills.
Here’s the exciting part: getting to the storehouse.Turn into the facility driveway on Harris Road, turn left at the stop sign when you first enter the parking lot. Follow the road almost to the end, and the storehouse will be on the right. It’s the large building facing the building with the smokestack. Drive up to the loading dock. Storehouse security will assist you in unloading your car; if no one is outside, go to the door.
Don’t know what’s needed or what to give? Hour Children and Mr. Goidel can make suggestions. Just remember, all gifts must be unwrapped. Let Hour Children know you’re making a donation by contacting them at firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 914-241-3100 ext. 4050 / 4055, or leave a voicemail at 800-330-2161, so your gift can be acknowledged.
