What’s new in rejuvenating beauty treatments

Elena Ginsberg provides a variety of facial rejuvenation treatments using LightPod-Neo laser and Platelet Rich Plasma.

Beauty trends aren’t just skin-deep now that some new and exciting skin rejuvenation treatments are available in our area. Expert Helen Famulare says gold is what’s hot this season, and she’s not referring to bling for the body. Her unique 24-carat-gold collagen mask can be used as a welcome “add on” to any of her other unique facial treatments at Salon Perri in Pound Ridge. “The anti-aging benefits of gold can be tracked back to Cleopatra,” Famulare says.

“Gold preserves skin luminosity and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles by as much as 75 percent, even after just one treatment. The gold mask is applied in gel form and massaged into the skin.

In addition, when it comes to beauty, Famulare recommends starting any treatment with exfoliation to cleanse the skin. At Salon Perri, the self-heating mineral mud bubbles up like popcorn, or there is a unique exfoliating scrub made of pomegranate, raspberry, and sugar that is warmed before application. Once the skin has been exfoliated, it may be time to consider a customized body bronzing treatment. “We feel thinner when we are tan,” Famulare says.

Elena and Andy Ginsberg believe that having youthful-looking skin inspires confidence in clients. At their newest location in Bedford, Primary Aesthetic Skin Care offers a variety of breakthrough skin rejuvenation procedures. One popular treatment, PRP, is used primarily on the face to address scarring, hyper-pigmentation, and wrinkles. Also known as “micro-needling” or “collagen induction therapy,” this process utilizes high-protein factors derived from a patient’s own blood (drawn in an amount similar to that of a lab test). The technology uses aspects of basic blood-based biochemistry. Elena first separates the blood in a centrifuge, which layers the components and creates a platelet-rich plasma.

The highly concentrated substance is then re-injected into the area of the skin being treated. “This plasma releases eight essential growth factors,” she explains. “It stimulates the production of new cells, blood vessels, and promotes collagen growth. Rejuvenation results are seen when the collagen starts its production in just a few weeks.”

Andy Ginsberg, who has been utilizing this therapy on himself to encourage healing from sports injuries like a torn meniscus, says the technology of his PRP treatments (spaced a month apart) have been benefiting him for 15 years. “Twenty percent of our clientele are men coming in to treat sports injuries,” Elena adds, “but another way this therapy benefits people is targeting the scalp for hair re-growth.”

“I’m the guinea-pig for that,” says her husband, who looks younger than his years and lifts a lock of hair to demonstrate. “This wasn’t like this before.”

When it comes to applying makeup for a holiday party, Kari Puckhaber at KD Studio in Katonah says exfoliating skin with a moisturizing facial is the very first step toward creating the “dewy” look (think J-Lo) that her clients request. Otherwise known as “strobing,” Puckhaber says she’s been using this makeup technique for years in her studio. Features are enhanced with layers of light shades rather than a more traditional technique known as contouring, a look associated with stars like Kim Kardashian.

Puckhaber uses illuminating moisturizers, and then to finish off the strobing look, she adds a powder. “This helps create an age-appropriate highlight. We want to accentuate our best features not highlight fine lines and imperfections,” she says. “It’s important also to only highlight spots on the face that naturally catch light, like the corners of the eyes, center of the nose, Cupid’s bow of the lip and cheek bones.” Puckhaber says all other products used on the face (like bronzer and blush) should be matte. “The key is not to look sweaty or greasy, and greasy is easy if you haven’t prepped properly or used the right products,” she cautions.

Helen Famulare sums up what might be the most important tip in skincare. “When you get home from the holiday party, for heaven’s sake, don’t go to sleep with your makeup on.”

JUST BROWSING
While eyebrows are key to expressing our emotions to others, the shaping of eyebrows can call attention to eyes and frame the face beautifully. Eyebrow threading, available at Eiluj Beauty Lounge in Katonah, offers more precise control and is gentler on the skin than waxing.
