What Exactly does the Community Center in Bedford do?
IN A COMMUNITY well-committed to good works, the Community Center of Northern Westchester is a stand out. Established in Katonah in 1992, the Center’s mission has been to improve the wellbeing and self-sufficiency of neighbors who are in need. And the need is big; today, the Center is helping over 1,800 families in 37 Northern Westchester communities, 10 times the number it served 20 years ago. Children comprise 34 percent of those who receive food from the Center’s food panty; the Center also runs a clothing bank and offers many classes, workshops, special drives, and educational programs. A remarkable 96,000 visits have been made to their food pantry.
Beyond food and clothing, some of the more unique programs offered by the Center have included providing prom attire to teens; tax prep assistance; counsel to job seekers; GED and citizenship exam prep; breast cancer awareness workshops; underwriting summer camp expenses; and teaming with Northern Westchester Hospital for health screenings and free flu shots. The busiest season for the Community Center is heating up as the Making a Difference Together Program provides special food and clothing for the holidays. As one very grateful (and necessarily anonymous) client said, “It is very emotional because these are items I couldn’t afford and having these foods makes the holiday special for my family.”
Donations of food and clothing may be made during business hours, Tuesday through Saturday, at 84 Bedford Rd., Katonah.
