Hallelujah, it’s gift-giving season again. Lucky Bedfordites never have to set foot in a mall as they have a multitude of wonderful shops to choose from. The following is a highly recommended, if all-too-brief, list of some of the best gifts—to give and receive—around our charm-filled towns. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to support local businesses.
Breeze (192 Katonah Avenue) opened in Katonah on November 1—proprietor Susan Maher has another store in Chappaqua with the same name. Breeze specializes in tableware and features an enticing array from the coveted line of Vietri products from Italy. Celebrate the season with Vietri’s distinctive Old St. Nick bakeware and dinnerware. Breeze also stocks Juliska “Country Estate” handmade dishes and accent pieces from Portugal in holiday and neutral shades.
Bijou (135 Katonah Avenue) is a jewelry maven’s dream.Everyday glamour and elegance is Bijou’s seductive theme. Casey Carter, the shop’s owner and jewelry curator, suggests making a statement at all the parties this season with black and white accessories. Alexis Bittar’s chunky, clear Lucite cuff with deco accents is the perfect ornament to decorate the wrist.
James (21 Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills) is all about Fair Trade. Ona Cohen, the shop’s proprietor, has a whimsical and heart-warming selection of handmade Christmas ornaments produced in Thailand and the Philippines from recycled phone books, as well as felt ornaments from Kyrgyzstan. Do your thing for wildlife by hanging a handmade “Save the Snow Leopard” ornament from Mongolia on your holiday tree.
Dennis Anderson at Bedford House (Depot Plaza, Bedford Hills) has scrumptious lamb’s-wool and cotton throws, just the thing to canoodle under by the fire, eh? Anderson loves trompe l’oeil pillars and faux candles that run on batteries. “They have an on/off switch and can work on a timer,” Anderson says. “They look as real as any expensive candle, plus there’s no concern about knocking them over.” He says he has to keep re-ordering these popular items.
Ebba (107 Katonah Avenue) has beautiful, thoughtful gifts in every price range—scarves, velvet tunics, candles, luxurious unguents, vegan-friendly handbags, and jewelry. This holiday season, Viktoria Fisch, the creative genius behind the merchandising, is featuring Aid Through Trade roll-on, hand-beaded, lightweight, jewel-toned bracelets made by young women in Nepal. “They work well with any and all other bracelets that you own,” Fisch says. At $15 each, splurge on a dozen to gift all your best girlfriends.
Fashion-forward Catherine H. boutique (18-24 The Parkway, Katonah) says that trending for the holidays is everything metallic. “Playing with texture, rich jewel-tone patterns, velvet, suede, leather with metallic finishes, shimmer,” Catherine H.’s sales help all say. Don’t miss the must-have collection of Old Gringo boots and bags.
Under one roof, Beehive Designer Collective (337 E. Main Street, Mount Kisco) boasts a veritable bazaar of the best, independent, local artisans. For the holidays, owner Dawn-Marie Manwaring suggests personalized enamel and sterling-silver pendants. “Pick a color and a symbol and it will be ready in three days,” she says.
Grandparents, are you stumped for an original, special gift for the kiddies? G. Willikers Toy Store (29 Katonah Avenue) has games, dolls, stuffed animals, puzzles, windup toys, and just about anything wonderful and creative to stimulate young imaginations. Featuring only the finest European brands like Trudi, Corolle, Bruder, Tolo, and Schleich, G. Willikers is a toy-store gem.
For food gifts, look no further than Bedford Gourmet (652 Old Post Road, Bedford) which stocks yummy cheeses, gourmet crackers, candy, and cookies. The prepared foods are excellent, and don’t miss the selection of Bobby Sue’s nuts.
L’Anjou Patisserie Française (130 N. Bedford Road, Mount Kisco) is the place to go for authentically French and luscious tartes, delicate butter cookies, beautifully decorated cakes, and toothsome savories and hors d’oeuvres. Wow your holiday guests with a bûche de noël (order in advance).
Last but not least, don’t forget the pets. Have them gorgeously groomed at Must Love Dogs (45 Katonah Avenue, Katonah) or Pawfection (51 Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills) to ensure the whole family will look picture perfect.
