Legea Opens Up Stateside
Italy's premiere sports shop now in Bedford Hills

All their lives, Antonio and Michael Corrado dreamt of playing soccer professionally. But if their on-the-field careers didn’t lead them to stardom, their backup plan also centered on “The Beautiful Game.” Now, they’re doing one of the closest things to playing: selling what many of the pros wear. On June 6, they opened Westchester’s first Legea outlet, located on North Bedford Road in Bedford Hills. Pronounced (lay-JAY-uh), the sportswear company was founded in 1988, but many Americans know very little about the franchise headquartered in Milan.
Legea doubles as a franchise name and clothing line, selling athletic gear from head to toe. The Corrados’ outlet on Route 117 specializes in soccer, basketball, and volleyball garments, while the location is fully refurbished and stocked for all seasons. Brothers five years apart in age, Antonio and Michael grew up in Katonah, New York. Now 25, Antonio played soccer in Italy and Germany immediately after graduating high school, before coming back to the states to earn his college degree. Michael, 20, has also been heavily involved in soccer his whole life in leagues around Westchester County.
Antonio says his inspiration for bringing Legea to Westchester began during his professional career in Europe. “All you really see in the U.S. is Nike and Adidas. When you travel around the world, you start to realize there’s other brands that exist in smaller markets, brands that don’t get the attention they deserve.”
Nike, arguably the premier manufacturer of sports equipment, netted a revenue of over $12.3 billion in the U.S. alone in 2014. Other multinational conglomerates like UnderArmour, New Balance, and the aforementioned Adidas have been controlling the sportswear industry for the last quarter-century. Legea is looking to join the moguls on the top of the mountain. Made largely of the same quality fabrics as any other leading athletic wear manufacturers, Legea promises buyers will “Dress like the pros.”
Legea also sponsors several sponsorships with amateur clubs in Italy, and has recently reached deals with several top division professional clubs. The Corrados’ Legea of Westchester is also the first all-inclusive outlet in the country, meaning it carries all workout and sports gear for men, women, and children. The team sales department focuses on providing youth soccer, basketball, and volleyball clubs the opportunity to train exclusively with their gear. Michael summarized why Legea has the ability to eventually climb up the athletic wear ranks. “We can provide youth players with a distinguished look, cutting edge style, and another option that won’t make them appear like every other team. That and our affordable prices are what I think it comes down to.”
But what about for the everyday customer who’s just looking for some workout gear for the gym who can’t afford the big name brands? For starters, tracksuits, compression gear, sweatshirts, and sweatpants all line Legea’s walls, and with a steep markdown in price from what most buyers are used to. Legea even offers a stylish collection of socks, ranging from super cushioned to super casual.
Why are the Corrados so confident they can lead Legea into the future? “We grew up in an Italian household with Italian culture,” says Antonio. “We have experience playing soccer, and our motto is Keep Running With Us. That in and of itself is our inspiration to provide the best. We grew up in this community, so it’s an opportunity for us to give back.”
Legea is located at 701 North Bedford Rd. in Bedford Hills, NY.
